FIR vs SIR In Winter Session: Action Against Sonia, Rahul Gandhi Heralds Fresh Trouble For Congress
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Indian political landscape, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a fresh First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, amidst the ongoing winter session of Parliament. This latest development has added to the already mounting troubles for the opposition party, which is struggling to regain its lost momentum.
The FIR, which was filed under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), pertains to alleged irregularities in the National Herald case, a long-standing dispute over the Congress's publication, which has been at the center of a bitter row between the party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government.
Reacting to the development, Congress's top legal brain, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, dismissed the fresh FIR as "just another rehash job" aimed at harassing the party's top leaders. Singhvi, who has been handling the National Herald case, expressed confidence that the court will deliver its verdict in favor of the Congress on December 16, when the matter is scheduled to come up for hearing.
The National Herald case has been a contentious issue between the Congress and the BJP, with the latter accusing the Gandhi family of misusing party funds to purchase the publication. However, the Congress has consistently maintained that the deal was legitimate and aimed at reviving the party's publication.
The fresh FIR has raised concerns within the Congress, with party leaders accusing the government of using the ED and other agencies to target its leaders. As the winter session of Parliament continues, the Congress is likely to face increased pressure to respond to the latest development, which could further polarize the party and its allies.
