Pilgrimage Spots Emerge as Hottest Travel Destinations
A surge in domestic pilgrimages has been observed in the past year, with industry executives predicting that the trend will continue unabated through the year-end. Travel operators are capitalizing on this growth, launching an array of packages catering to diverse interests and age groups.
According to Neeraj Singh Dev, executive vice-president and head of ecommerce and short-haul holidays at Thomas Cook (India), the company has witnessed a significant increase in pilgrimage tours. From Mathura to Udupi and Kashi's Vishalakshi to Madurai's Meenakshi, the demand for these spiritual getaways is on the rise.
Dev attributes this growth to a shift in the way people perceive pilgrimages. "Pilgrimages are no longer being seen as basic or frugal," he said. "Our priority VIP darshans are sold out as of today." This indicates a growing interest in experiential travel, with younger travelers, often referred to as Gen Z, leading the charge.
The resurgence of pilgrimages can be attributed to various factors, including a desire for spiritual renewal, a need for community and connection, and an interest in cultural heritage. Travel operators are responding by offering bespoke packages that cater to these interests, often incorporating elements of wellness, adventure, and education.
As the year-end approaches, travel operators are gearing up to meet the anticipated surge in demand. With a range of options available, from budget-friendly to luxury, pilgrims can choose from a variety of experiences that cater to their unique preferences. As the pilgrimage industry continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how travel operators adapt to meet the evolving needs of their customers.
